FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW MUCH CAN I SAVE?
The savings we can offer for each customer depend on many factors, most importantly your property's wind resources and electricity usage. After a thorough analysis, United Wind will prepare a unique WindQuote proposal for you that outlines a few different savings plan options. No matter which savings plan you choose, each one is designed so that you can save thousands over the lifetime of the lease.
CAN I REALLY GET A WINDLEASE FOR $0 DOWN?
Yes! You may be able to switch to wind for as little as $0 down. You can also prepay for some or all of your electricity in advance for increased savings over the lease term - it’s your choice! Because every customer's needs are different, we will prepare a few different options for you in your customized WindQuote, including each plan's expected savings over the length of the lease term.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE WIND DOES NOT BLOW?
When your turbine isn't spinning, your property will draw energy from your standard local utility grid. Wind speeds vary greatly throughout the year, so your energy system will participate in net metering - meaning that when your turbine is producing more energy than your property will use, this extra energy will be sent back into the utility grid, and you will receive credits on your utility bill. You will use these credits during months when wind speeds are lower.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE POWER GOES OUT?
Our systems are designed with safety devices that will disconnect the turbine from the grid in the event of a power outage. This is to protect both the turbine and utility workers making repairs. Your wind turbine will automatically reconnect when power is restored.
WHAT KIND OF TURBINES DO YOU OFFER?
We offer a range of turbines, from 10kW machines up to 100kW, depending on what makes the most sense for your property. We partner with only the most reliable turbine and tower manufacturers, and regularly assess our vendors to make sure we offer the most modern, efficient energy systems.
WILL MY TOWN ALLOW ME TO INSTALL A WIND TURBINE?
Obtaining a permit is typically not a problem if certain conditions are met. As part of our comprehensive service, United Wind will work with your local permitting body to obtain the required documents for installation and ensure the permits will meet your local zoning requirements.
WILL MY WIND TURBINE KILL BIRDS?
Studies have shown that there is little evidence that small wind turbines pose a significant danger to birds or bats. In fact, according to a comprehensive study by the American Wind Wildlife Institute, buildings, power lines, and even cats, have proven to be more hazardous to birds than wind turbines.
ARE WIND TURBINES LOUD?
They’re quieter than you think -- and getting quieter every day. The turbines that United Wind offers have AWEA Sound Ratings under 50 dBA. How does this number translate? Normal conversation sound levels are approximately 60 dBA, and a quiet library is rated at 40 dBA. Often the sound of the wind is noisier than the turbine itself!
